´╗┐Sunday August 24, 2003 Poetry Hike LT South to the new Spruce Ledge Camp Leader: Reidun Nuquist Oh, what a bright, cool day after weeks of soggy weather! Nine of us started south on the LT from Rte. 118 in Eden; two turned around at the Babcock Trail junction, after reading us a poem about the meaning of poetry. The rest of us continued on through Devil's Gulch to the attractive Spruce Ledge Camp (windows, skylight, sliding doors) and nearby picnic 'pavilion.' Here we ate our lunch while listening to poems by Poe, Frances Frost, and others. Mary Layman and Bob Schwarz read their own. This is Bob's: REIDUN SAID TO BRING A POEM. A POEM A POEM I NEED A POEM. I SEARCHED THE HOUSE FOR ROBERT FROST. I'M SURE IT'S HERE, IT CAN'T BE LOST. THERE'S MITCHELL AND MITCHNER, BUT NARE RHYME. I'LL KEEP ON LOOKING THERE'S STILL TIME. I FOUND STEEL AND GRISHAM , KOONTZ AND KING. BUT THATS ALL FICTION, IT'S THE WRONG THING. AND THERE HE IS, ON THE TOP SHELF. BETWEEN TWO MYSTERIES, JOYCE KILMER HIMSELF. I THOUGHT THIS IS IT, AND READ FOR AWHILE. BUT DECIDED NO, ITS JUST NOT MY STYLE. So I'LL DO THE HIKE, THEN I WILL SAY. SORRY FOLKS, NO POEM TODAY. - Bob Schwarz and another: BRIGHT ARISING Darkness surrenders to distant western horizon; Behold, bright morning sun is arising. Arise too, o hearty hiker and prepare; Take a respite from this world of care. Stroll the valley's verdant floor where dawn's mists are vaporizing. Yonder, the luring trail-head doth call; It beckons, "Step 'neath my trees stately and tall." O hiker climb this lofty granite tower, Delight upon my exquisite alpine flower. Trek my rugged path all bejeweled by the light of Sol. The mountain path doth range to soaring height. Note with awe each ascending layer of nature's delight. O tender spirit you've scaled life's layers too. Dissonance and consonance have both courted you. Climb now your arduous path, 'til you reach your Olympian site. - Marty Lee Layman-Mendonca Participants: Andrew Nuquist Marty Layman-Mendonca Mary Garcia Margaret McClellan Harry Burnbaum Priscilla Daggett Michael Chernick Bob Schwarz Reidun Nuquist
