Sunday, May 22, 1966 Work Hike to Smugglers' Notch: TRAIL CLEARING TIME. Bring axes, saws, etc., and a trail lunch. FREE hearty breakfast will be served to all volunteer workers at the Mt. Mansfield Picnic Area near Smugglers Notch at 8:30 a.m. Leader: Dave Morse and Dave Otis The trail clearing for Saturday was cancelled because Dave Otis could not get any helpers on that day. On Sunday, Marion Gorham and Doris Washburn left Montpelier at 7:00 a.m. for Smugglers' Notch picnic area where they prepared breakfast for the rest of the work party. It was a beautiful sunny warm morning, but we decided to make a fire in the fireplace (for atmosphere -- all the cooking was done on a Coleman.) Unfortunately, the fire wouldn't start, so some gas was poured onto it. However, there must have been a spark because the whole gas can caught fire. When we moved the Coleman away from the fireplace, the coffee pot spilled over. So, when the rest of the group arrived at 8:30, we had just about gotten things under control. An appetizing breakfast of bacon and fried eggs, orange juice, coffee and coffee cake were enjoyed by all, including Dick Babcock, Dave Hine, Dave Otis, Dave Morse, Sally Andrews, Fran Knott, Doris and Marion. At about 9:30, we started out on the Long Trail from Smugglers' Notch. Snow was encountered immediately, obscuring the trail. Several blowdowns were cleared away. We reached Sterling Pond Lodge at 11:30. The ice was still covering the pond. It was decided to go no further ip the trail because of the deep snow. The lodge was cleaned up and a sign made by Dave Morse attached to the front door identifying the lodge. Also, a sign was erecting identifying Elephants Head Trail, and one each showing the Long Trail north and south. Two notebooks in jars were posted for registration purposes. As we returned to Smugglers' Notch, blazes were painted along the trail by Sally, Fran and Doris. Sunday, October 2, 1966 Burnt Rock Mountain: Burnt Rock via Long Trail from Appalachian Gap, or for a shorter hike via the Hedgehog Brook Trail. Possible celebration on top if appropriate. Leader: Doris Washburn A group of five club members left Montpelier at 9:15 a.m. after a heavy downpour. This group as led by Doris Washburn and included Dick and Dot Babcock, Marion Gorham and Dave Morse. It was a beautiful ride down to Appalachian Gap - the foliage was at its peak. We started hiking from there at 10:00 a.m. It was very windy and quite cool. We arrived at Birch Glen Camp about 12:00 noon and had part of our lunch. Continuing on, we stopped a few times to pick up beechnuts. Doris saw a fawn scamper from the side of the trail. We finished our lunch at Cowles Cove Shelter. We arrived at the junction of the Hedgehog Brook Trail at about 3:00 p.m., just as Dave Otis, Sally Andrews, Fran Knott and Sandy Anderson were approaching. This was the official completion of hiking the Long Trail for Marion Gorham. After taking a few pictures here, we all continued on up to the top of Burnt Rock Mountain. After surveying the foliage from there and getting a very good view of Lake Champlain, snow on Mt. Washington, Mt. Marcy and others, we found a sheltered spot from the wind. There we toasted Marion with Taylor's sherry wine, cheese and crackers. We all came down the Hedgehog Brook Trail and ended our hike about 5:30 p.m. (P.S. Two "end-to-end" badges were presented to Marion from Montpelier Section, GMC.) Participants: Doris Washburn Dick and Dot Babcock Marion Gorham Dave Morse Dave Otis Sally Andrews Fran Knott Sandy Anderson
