Sunday April 10 2022 Bear Swamp Loop by Phyllis Rubenstein

On the afternoon of Sunday, April 10, 2022, 8 of us walked the Bear Swamp Loop in Middlesex. We started under cool, cloudy skies, which opened up to a light drizzle as well a snow, which we preferred to the rain. Soon after we left Rumney Memorial School, we were met by a large dog with a curly tail, probably an Akita, who became increasingly friendly as she led us on our walk, only leaving us near the end of our route. We were on quiet, muddy roads, nearly impassable by cars at various points. We noticed the fairly recent clearing of small trees below the utility line easement on North Bear Swamp Road, enjoyed the stone walls and open fields at the intersection of North and East Bear Swamp Roads, trekked over snow and around water on the unmaintained portion of East Bear Swamp Road, passing by the trailhead to Hunger Mountain and White Rocks and an old beaver swamp. We saw lots of green moss and ferns, and commented on the various styles of houses and camps we saw along the way. It was so satisfying to be outdoors on a raw day in such good company!
