Trip Reports

Saturday March 07 2020 Taylor Lodge snowshoe by Steve and Heather Bailey

Heather and I volunteered to lead a hike for the main club's Winter Trails Day, based at the GMC visitor center. We had a student from Sterling College with us who was studying outdoor activities management and served as a third leader. There were 11 others on the hike as well. It was a beautiful warm sunny day when we left the GMC HQ, but when we arrived at the trailhead the wind was howling across Lake Mansfield. Fortunately we were soon in the woods where the wind was less. After a lunch at Taylor Lodge, we took a different route back. We started off on the Clara Bow trail for a few hundred yards until we reached a frozen waterfall, which was the subject of many photos from the group. We then went straight downhill to the open beaver meadow. Everything was frozen solid and we had a pleasant walk along the far side of the meadow until we got back to the trail. We had nice views from the meadow, and it made a nice alternative to just retracing our steps on the trail.
