Saturday January 18 2020 Paine Mtn to Irish Hill Traverse by Nancy SchulzWith a temp below zero to start, it was encouraging to have nine hardy hikers turn out. After consolidating into fewer cars, we drove part way up Darling Road in Berlin and left two cars. Then we drove the remaining cars to the intersection of Forest Road and Turkey Hill Road in Northfield and began our snowshoe trek. A few inches of additional snow had fallen the day before so we were making fresh tracks in a beautiful blanket of white all day. Fortunately, the wind was calm and we were able to keep warm as we walked the 8 miles up Paine Mountain, across the ridge and down Irish Hill. All in the group were very congenial and everyone was well equipped for the conditions. We returned to Montpelier before dark and before snow began falling in the next storm.
