Sunday August 09, 2015 Long Trail Section Backpack August 9 by Phyllis RubensteinOn August 9, I crossed the Lamoille River and had a short ascent to a nice view south. I passed Roundtop Shelter, which has skylights! I didn't spend much time at the Laraway Lookout because it was sprinkling. I spent the night alone in my tent at Corliss Camp. The next morning, Devil's Gulch was delightful. I enjoyed the view from the Fire Tower on the summit of Belvidere. At Tillotson Camp, I spent the night in my tent, although there were others in the shelter, tents and a hammock. It rained lightly that night and since thunderstorms were predicted for the next day, I decided not to summit Jay. Instead I had a short hike to Hazen's Notch Camp, where I spent the afternoon talking to a southbound backpacker, who was spending his second day indoors due to the weather. The next morning, it rained on and off and Jay was socked in, but at least there was no thunder! Once I left the summit, the rain stopped. No sooner did I arrive at Laura Woodward Shelter that a full-blown rainstorm began. I spent that night in the shelter and was joined much later by four very wet backpackers, whom I first met at the Middlebury Snow Bowl. My last day on the trail, it rained on and off most of the way to Journey's End and I had no views until the Canadian border. I enjoyed the views from the passenger seat on the ride home! Next time. . . .
