Smuggler's Notch work hike It was a chilly morning with temps in the high 30's, but the sky was clearing. Amazingly,12 people showed up for this late fall work trip. Two of them were new trail workers. We split into two groups at the road closure gate parking lot. One headed up the closed Notch Road to see if the Sterling Pond Trail might be accessible. It was not. We ran into a couple of inches of icy, hard packed snow. The road walk was an adventure with a couple of slip and falls. When we got to the top, the trail was completely covered and unworkable. The second group had started working up the LT/Elephant's Head trail cleaning water bars, and removing obstacles on the way. They ran into icy condition just below the first slide. A group of us had lunch at the picnic area, then headed home at about 1:00 PM.
