Work Hike to Smugglers' Notch
Eight stalwarts braved the twenty degree morning and AOT's early closing of Stowe's Mountain Road to work on the Long Trail at Smugglers' Notch. We didn't get to the Notch, but did clean up the lower portion of the trail with the usual rake, hazel hoe and pruners.
Eric and I tried to reach a fallen tree reported five weeks earlier, but snow and ice made the trail too dangerous for our task. Soon after we turned back, some of the other workers caught up with us and everyone started back, clipping and scraping on the way.
It was time for lunch when we returned to the picnic area, so we utilized one of the conveniently located tables and enjoyed the warmth, now in the mid forties.
Note: AOT says that the closure of VT 108, which started October 14, "will reopen at some point during the next few days as the long-term forecast is favorable." In the meantime, a lot of people are enjoying a pleasant and still colorful fall road walk.
