Mount Jefferson, White Mountain 48-4K Series

The combination of a brutally hot day of 90+ -degree weather in combination with an too easy to miss trailhead made for a shortened trip. Our original plan of bagging Adams after Jefferson would have left us coming down in the dark . The prudent choice of coming down The Israel Ridge Path from Jefferson gave us outstanding views of the Castle Trail we had previously ascended. The trail also provided a welcome heat relief break and water fill up stop when we hit the Cascade Brook which was running hard and cold. It was a small group of 3. Ed and I have already bagged Adams, and our guest, Jeff, had no interest in being a 48-4K peak bagger, so the day was not a loss in that respect. My learning as a first time trip leader was to not follow the crowd! We followed 2 groups of hikers who all missed trailhead to the Castle Trail and took a long walk along a railroad bed that cost us valuable time and energy. The AMC sign pointed 4.5 miles to the Mount Jefferson summit as being straight ahead. The actual trailhead was a quick left that was completely hidden and unmarked. For my future hikes, I have visited and found all the trailheads.
