Saturday December 16, 1995 X-C ski or snowshoe or hike (depending on conditions) to Corliss Camp Leader: Andrew & Reidun Nuquist Holiday Trip to Corliss Camp on the Long Trail at Johnson: We have done this almost-annual holiday trip in all kinds of weather, but never in such perfect winter conditions! Eighteen people showed up, from our section and Laraway, with a few guests. Most brought skis, although some had snowshoes. All were impressed by the amount of snow in mid-December, especially those of us who remembered last year's lack of cover. No skiers had been up the Davis Neighborhood Trail, so trail-breaking was the order of the day. We took turns up front. with most of us ready to turn the job over to the next fellah after just a few yards. This was heavy work. particularly on the steeper hills. When I took off my skis in a tricky spot.- 1 sank in snow over my knees. It took us one and one-half hours to reach Corliss Camp, a distance of only 1.8 miles. Having arrived in time for lunch, we wasted no time firing up the wood stove. Soon warm. steaming bodies, wood heat, and candles made the camp cozy and warn. We shared snacks and holiday cookies. The gift exchange was, as usual, expertly handled by Doris Washburn, who gave us all a chance to swap our gift for another. In the end, only Doris did. having set her eye on a small kaleidoscope. The rest of us were perfectly happy with chocolate bars, ornaments, a magnifying glass, fudge .... We ended the party by singing carols. led by Tom Weiss, Anne Burcroff, and Andrew Nuquist. all experienced choristers. Then, full of holiday spirit, we headed down the trail which was now perfectly groomed. thanks to all of us. In no time at all we were back after some fine downhill runs. If it hadn't been nearly dusk by then. l think some of us would have liked to do it all over again! Participants: Andrew & Reidun Nuquist Tom Weiss Anne Burcroff
