Saturday July 23, 1994 Summer Mystery Hike Leader: Thomas Weiss We met at MHS on schedule, when the mystery was revealed. The hike is the Peacham Bog Trail, leaving from the Groton Nature Center. The swim was at Boulder Beach on Lake Groton. We proceeded to the Nature Center. Doris almost got left behind. When Dave Morse went through East Montpelier, she started following him. When I got to East Montpelier I saw her not, but two of the cars from MHS were in one of the normal meeting lots. Dave stopped and told Doris to go back to East Montpelier because I was looking for er. We crossed somewhere on Route 2 without seeing each other. At Groton, Dave went back for a search party and met Doris looking for us not too far away. Lesson: Mystery hike participants meeting en route need to know the destination in case they get lost or miss the pickup somehow. The hike was enjoyable. Along the logging road were many ripe blueberries and red raspberries. In the woods two bunchberries, clintonia berries, and solomon's seal berries were all ripe with their bright red and deep blue. The wild sarsaparilla's black berries were also ripe. There were many colorful or prettily patterned wild mushrooms. One the edge of the bog we found a pitcher plant with half a dozen or more pitchers. About 2:30 we got to Boulder Beach. The day was hot (in the 80's) and sticky. The lake was wonderfully refreshing after our five mile hike. Water temperature was posted as 75°. Some ate lunch on the hike, others while waiting at the Nature Center for slower hikers, and others at the beach. We departed by ones or twos as other activities and schedules required. The last left a bit after 5:00 P.M. all participants enjoyed the outing and proclaimed the day a success. Participants: Thomas Weiss Mary Smith Ken Kidd David P.
