On a day that surprisingly started with light rain in Montpelier and light snow in Middlesex, four of us decided to hike up White Rocks rather than Hunger Mountain as had been planned. The trail was covered in leaves and, as we ascended, snow clung to mosses, ferns, and conifer branches. It was cloudy, windy and chilly. When we reached the tabletop, or sombrero, as one of us described it, the clouds briefly lifted for a brilliant-orange foliage view to the east. On the second sombrero we were again briefly treated to a beautiful view. We found an area protected from the wind to eat lunch and then headed back down. Perhaps one-quarter of the hikers we met were in shorts! Back in the parking lot, it may have been shorts weather but not up top. It was exhilarating to experience snow in early October.
