Sat Mar 09 2024 Spruce Mountain Hike by Steve Bailey
Both the road conditions and the trail conditions were a challenge on this day, which is probably why only four people participated on this hike. Mud season was in full swing on the roads, but fortunately everyone was able to arrive at the parking lot after braving the ruts on East Hill Rd. The trail was a different story altogether. We expected some mud at the start, but the trail was ice and snow for pretty much the whole way. The day before had been quite warm, and the night cold, so we had lots of smooth ice on the trail. When we got to the top the wind was howling and the clouds were low, so we skipped the fire tower. We found some great moose tracks right at the summit.
