Saturday; May 21st
Hiked from Lincoln Gap to Battell Shelter; some went on to Mt. Abraham
We left from the Library around 9:30, and were ready to start up the trail around 11 o’clock. We parked our (3) cars along the road-side just below Lincoln Gap, and the first 100 feet of the trail went along side the road. We found a dead “porkie” that was apparently tossed up off the road having been hit by a car.
The trail was well defined except where the broad paths of wind-falls criss-crossed the trail so completely that we had to crawl over and/or under the dead trees of pick a way around them to the free trail again. The climb up the 1000 feet over the 2 – 2 1/2 miles to Battell Shelter was for the most part a very gradual one. The trek from the shelter to Mt. Abraham was fairly gradual for a 1/4 mile and then went up nearly 500 feet in only 1/4 mile.
The weather was again very favorable! Except for distant views the air was clear. The sun was hidden by haze, but the day was very warm. Shirt sleeve and sleeveless shirts were very comfortable, and in one case a pair of shorts were worn (Doc Bryant wore knee sox tho!) and the warm air felt good.
We ate our lunch at the shelter, having made it up to the shelter from the road in only 1 1/2 hours or a little over. (We set ourselves a rather brisk pace.) Three of us in fact were rather “pooped” and stayed behind at the shelter while the other 10 went up ahead for the 1 mile round trip up to the peak of Mt. Abraham. Henry Holmes, Louise Hutchinson, and Phyllis Murphy lounged around and chatted during the 1 1/4 hrs the others were off.
The trip back to the road was made in an hour and we got back to Montpelier around 4:30.
Those on this hike were Mrs. Bryant, Doc, and Marleen and Carolyn; Joe Wilson; Louise Hutchinson; Doris Newton; Fran and Mr Holmes; Phil Corker; Phyl Murphy; Harlan Farnsworth; & Dot McKenna — 13!
