Reidun Nuquist called the meeting to order at 6:00 pm at the home of Ken Hertz. In Steve’s absence, John Buddington took the minutes.
- Approval of minutes of June 4, 2014, meeting. The spelling of Christie Carter’s name was corrected. The minutes were approved unanimously.
- President’s report
Steve Lightholder was acknowledged as secretary, replacing Mari Zagarins.
The GMC Annual Meeting was held at Killington in June. Reidun gave the report for the Montpelier Section. Also attending were Ken, Lexi Shear, Mike, Andrew Nuquist, and Doris Washburn. Doris received the President’s Award and her article ‘The Green Mountain Club and Me!’ will by republished in the Long Trail News.
Reidun and Andrew will present a Taylor Series event on the Norwegian Coastal Ferry at the GMC on Friday, 6 March 2015.
The Montpelier Section may decide to host another Taylor event in the late winter. The Montpelier Section’s 60th anniversary will be in 2015. Reidun suggested that we march in the Montpelier Independence Day parade on July 3. GMC President Jean Haig and Mike DeBonis will be invited to march with us.
- Vice President’s report:
The Section annual meeting will be held Friday, 10 April 2015, at Christ Episcopal Church, 64 State Street, Montpelier (across from the Post Office, Court House, and junction with Elm Street).
Section outing proposals for the winter quarter are due 24 October.
Ken proposed ‘Sunday in the Park’ events for next spring and summer. They would be regular, short, at a fixed location and time, and aimed at nonmembers. Example: every Sunday 1-5 PM at Montpelier High School; leadership rotates weekly each month. Various comments were made about the importance of reaching out to nonmembers as well as the effects of diluting our leadership pool. No clear consensus was achieved. The possibility of an ad-hoc ‘New Member’ series remains open as events added to the Spring and Summer calendars and announced via the Members List.
- Trails and Shelters Coordinator’s report:
The relocated Long Trail from Barnes Camp to Elephant’s Head Trail will be opened in June 2015.
Work hikes: 25 October in Smugglers; 1 November on Bamforth Ridge.
The adopters of Bamforth Ridge Shelter have not reported to Fred (and possibly not to the GMC); Fred questioned their viability as adopters and has considered recommending their replacement.
Eric has adopted the Long Trail between River Road and the Bamforth Ridge Shelter.
(Mike DeBonis reported on the status of the Winooski Bridge and the GMC camps at the conclusion of the meeting.)
- Treasurer’s report:
Ken had previously distributed the quarterly financial report. YTD income of $3,253.50 is on track or ahead of the budgeted $4,340; YTD expenses of $606.16 is on track for the budgeted $2,700 (before a $3,000 donation to GMC).
Officers must explicitly authorize a certificate of deposit with Vermont State Employees Credit Union. Ken moved “Adoption By Unanimous Written Consent of Governing Members”:
The undersigned adopt on behalf of the Business/Organization the following attached resolutions and agree to all actions directed therein. The death or withdrawal of any person signed below shall not constitute a revocation of any authority granted by such resolutions until the Credit Union is notified in writing of such death and the extent of any resulting revocation. Furthermore, the undersigned certify(ies) that he/she/they constitute(s) all of the members vested with authority to make decisions on behalf of the Business/Organization and that no member with decision making authority has been omitted; that they are authorized to adopt resolutions by unanimous written consent; that all of the information provided above is true; that attached are true and correct copies of resolutions adopted by this unanimous written consent; that adoption of these resolutions is in accordance with the law and, as applicable, the Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws or Code of Regulations, Constitution, Charter and/or rules of the Business/Organization; and that such resolutions have not been withdrawn or changed
President, Vice President, and Treasurer will sign this form and convey it to VSECU.
The motion was seconded and approved unanimously with no abstentions.
The supply of section business cards, handed out to hikers met during events and work hikes, are depleted. Reidun suggested that we give out Long Trail decals (available from the club) and stamp the reverse side with identifying information of our section.
- Membership Coordinator’s report:
Christie reported that the Section has 565 voting members, comprised of 131 individuals, 136 families, and 106 memberships in other categories. For the quarter, 11 members dropped membership, 9 joined, and 16 renewed.
- Editor’s report:
The Trail Talk deadline is 24 October.
- Publicity Coordinator’s report
Kevin will add the Montpelier Front Porch Forum to the publicity list.
The Times-Argus calendar has not printed our submissions for a few months. It has not responded to Kevin’s queries.
Kevin is considering removing the Times-Argus from the publicity list.
- Webmaster’s report:
Ken has reminded trip leaders who have not yet submitted event reports to do so.
Ken intends to purchase his own copy of Adobe software and would use it to convert to Personal Document Format (.pdf) all Trail Talk issues and post them on the web. (Free converters produce unsuitably large files.)
- Director’s report:
Priscilla Daggett substituted for Mike and Eric in the October board meeting. Mike’s report of staff changes was amplified later by Mike DeBonis.
- Set the date for next EC meeting: Wednesday, 3 December, at a location and time to be determined.
No new business.
Fred moved adjournment at 7:19; seconded by Nancy; and agreed to unanimously.
Special guest Mike DeBonis, GMC executive director, will join us for an update on club activities and to answer questions you may have.
Twelve (or perhaps 13) Section members joined the 10 officers for Mike’s discussion.
Respectfully submitted, John Buddington, acting secretary
