Secretary’s Report

Our last annual meeting was held April 24, 1963 and was attended by 23 persons. At that time Dave Otis was elected President, Harlan Farnsworth, Treasurer, and myself [Marion Gorham], Secretary. Clyde Smith, of the Burlington Section, was the speaker and showed some beautiful slides of the Green Mountains, White Mountains and Adirondacks.

Since that time we have held 4 schedule planning meetings and participated in 24 hikes or outings. Attendance at 6 of these was 2 to 5; at 13 – 6 to 12; and at 5, 19-30. Our most frequent attendance seems to range between 6 and 12. Food seems to draw the largest attendance: the Chicken Barbecue, Corn Roast, Oyster Stew, Pancake Supper,and Sugar-on-Snow Party attracted the largest numbers.

Our paid membership at the present time is 38. Last year it was 37.

Minutes

The meeting was held at the Vermont College Student Center and somebody counted 54 persons at one time during the evening. At any rate it was crowded, we ran out of silver, and had a hard time keeping up with the demand for coffee.

Dave Otis, President, welcomed the group and announced the new schedule. Supper was served, and, immediately following the meal Harlan Farnsworth led the group in a few songs.

The program consisted of an illustrated lecture by one of our members, Fred Larsen, who showed slides and spoke on his trip to Alaska last summer as a member of a scientific expedition to study glaciers. It was very well received by the group. [Larsen was an assistant professor of geology at Norwich University.]

The business meeting which followed the program was conducted by the president who first called for the Treasurer’s report, which was given by Harlan Farnsworth, Treasurer. The report of the last annual meeting was read by the Secretary followed by some statistics concerning the year’s activities. Next the president called for the report of the Nominating Committee which was given by Dave Morse. Other members of this committee were Dick Babcock and Francs Holmes.

The slate of officers presented were unanimously elected with no nominations from the floor:

The president urged members to call leaders before hikes and to encourage new membership.

Chotsie Peterson, President of the Vermont College Outing Club, thanked the group for inviting V.C. Outing Club members to participate in the G.M.C. hikes as did Mike Maroska for the Norwich Outing Club.
