Executive Committee Meeting April 4, 2023

Meeting

GREEN MOUNTAIN CLUB, MONTPELIER SECTION

Minutes of the Executive Committee

April 4, 2023

The meeting, held via Zoom, was called to order at 6:00 pm by President Dana Lawrence. Present, in addition to Dana Lawrence, were Scott Richardson, Steve and Heather Bailey, Suzi Swanson, Ken Hertz, Morgan Irons, Andrew S. Nuquist and Charlene Bohl.

Andrew Nuquist, a longtime member who has led over 400 outings for the Montpelier Section, welcomed the new members of the executive committee Scott Richardson and Suzi Swanson. He encouraged them to read “A Capital Section: The History of the Green Mountain Club’s Montpelier Section, 1955-2005″ written by his wife Reidun Dahle Nuquist.

Heather Bailey then presented the Membership Report. The section presently has 528 voting members, down 3 from the last report. The Section receives 25% of the membership dues paid to the main club.

Scott Richardson then presented his inaugural Treasurers Report which showed the Section presently has over $8000. A discussion ensued about what the money was used for. These include expenses of the annual meeting, for space rental, speakers and other fees. The section also buys tools. The section has also contributed toward the construction of shelters and privies, in consultation with the main club. In prior years, there has been a motion at the section’s annual meeting to donate any excess of over 150% of the section’s yearly budget to the main club. This amount will be indicated in the Treasurers Report presented at the annual meeting. The fiscal year of the section ends at the end of April.

Vice President Steve Bailey then discussed the sections Annual Meeting which will be held Sunday May 21, 2023, at 2:00 pm at the Old Shelter in Hubbard Park. Prior to the meeting, Steve will prepare the slate of officers and the proposed bylaw change; Scott Richardson will prepare the Treasurer’s Report. These will be distributed to the membership prior to the meeting. Members may vote electronically prior to the meeting or at the meeting. Members can bring snacks. After the business meeting, there will be a group walk in Hubbard Park.

Possible participation in the Montpelier July 3 parade will be discussed at the annual meeting.

It is hoped that next year, the section will resume holding the annual meeting at an indoor venue, with a speaker, potluck dinner and awards.

Steve Bailey then went on to discuss Outings. The deadline for the submission of outings is usually 2-5 months prior to the This allows time for distribution of the outing details to Main Club and Trail Talk. Outings are on the calendar at Main Club and in Trail Talk. They are also on the Section website.

In the future, additional outings may be listed on the section website 2-3 weeks prior to the outing. Steve has obtained a new Gmail account for the section and hopefully will be able to use it to notify members of outings. There will also be an Events List which everyone can subscribe to.

Section Property. The section presently has tools stored at Ann Burcroff’s house. Ann may be selling her house and leaving the area in the next year or so. Dana will approach her to let us know when to remove the tools. Ken also has written materials and photographs in his house.

Trail Talk. Only 12 copies of Trail Talk need to be sent out; the remainder of members will receive a link to view it.

Articles for the next issue of Trail Talk need to be sent to Morgan by the end of the month.

Hopefully, the next Trail Talk will include an update from Phyllis Rubenstein about her Appalachian Trail journey.

The meeting adjourned at 7:15 pm.
