Executive Committee meeting of 31 December 1969
Officers Present: Reidun Nuquist, President; Kathy Gohl, Vice-president; Ken Hertz, Treasurer; Christie Carter, Membership Coordinator; Kevin Ryan, Publicity Coordinator; Steve Bailey, Trails and Shelters Coordinator; John Buddington, Webmaster; Mike Wetherell, GMC Director; Eric Seidel, Alternate Director; Nancy Jordan, Trail Talk Editor; Steve Lightholder, Secretary.
Reidun called the meeting to order at 7 pm at Mike’s home. She welcomed Steve Bailey as the new Trails and Shelters Coordinator.
Old Business
1.There were no objections to the minutes of the February 25, 2015 meeting, so Reidun declared them approved.
2.Vice-president’s report: Kathy said that the annual meeting went well. It was good to set the date early. There was good attendance. A meeting in the space above ours was distracting; we will speak to the church about that. The summer outing schedule is full; Nancy said the fall schedule needs to be set by July 15. Discussion followed on ways to increase trip leadership. A look at outing attendance figures showed a wide variance with no discernible trend.
3.Director’s report: Mike said that the Young Adventurer’s Club had no activities this spring. The next GMC board meeting will be next week at annual meeting. The main club is in good shape both financially and in terms of staff cohesion.
4.Treasurer’s report: Ken presented a statement and noted that the finances are in good shape. We have $4,650.37 in our checking account and $3,000 in a certificate of deposit. A $2,000 donation to GMC, voted at annual meeting, has been sent. Reidun and Ken said that the small amount, about $30, generated by cookie sales at Taylor series should be donated to GMC in the future to save the bookkeeping hassle. No one objected.
5.Membership Coordinator’s report: Christie reported that membership is stable at 371 memberships and 562 voting members. The ad hoc committee on new members was able to reach 7 out of 14. Some have young children; some expressed interest in trail work. Follow-up procedures were discussed.
6.Trails and Shelters Coordinator’s report: Steve said that the work hike on Bamforth Ridge attracted 11 people and was successful. The Smugglers’ Notch effort required two days. Discussion ensued about the advisability of having two work days there in the fall and the difficulty in performing maintenance all the way to Chilcoot Pass. Frequently used tools are now stored at Ann Burcroff’s; others are at John Buddington’s. Steve plans to purchase two metal rakes and a larger brush saw. New waiver forms, for use when working on federal land, were discussed and felt to be too restrictive for use by this section. Reidun noted that trail relocation work south of the Winooski River will be led this summer by GMC. Trail adopters from the section are Eric Seidel for Bamforth Ridge and Morgan Irons for the Long Trail from Route 108 to Sterling Pond. Steve said he will adopt the Sterling Pond Trail.
7.Publicity Coordinator’s report: Kevin sends notice of our events to The World, The Bridge, Vermont Sports, The Stowe Reporter, Waterbury Record, and the Times Argus.
The T-A is selective in what’s published, but some of our events are getting posted.
8.Webmaster’s report: John indicated that all of Trail Talk is now on line, thanks to Ken. Ken also mentioned that our members list is sometimes blocked due to anti-spam actions by some service providers. There are 80 names on the section list and 130 names on the trekkers list.
9.Editor’s report: Nancy will place a notice in the next Trail Talk indicating that it’s available on line. This is now the case; it can be accessed from our home page.
10.President’s report: Reidun noted that current office-holders may review and edit their job descriptions at any time. Folks were encouraged to attend the main club annual meeting on June 13. It would be good to have another membership meeting in the fall; various program possibilities were discussed. The current Taylor series arrangements with the main club may change next season. The section will march in Montpelier’s July 3 parade; Andrew Nuquist is coordinating this effort. The main club is sponsoring a Trail Magic day on August 8. This would involve members stationed at Long Trail road crossings to offer information about the club. Volunteers are needed. Volunteers will also be needed for our table at the Montpelier Farmer’s Market on August 15. Ken will coordinate this effort.
New Business
Ken suggested that we revisit the by-laws prior to next meeting since that hasn’t been done in a while.
Barnes Camp is available for GMC meetings, but its practicality is in doubt.
Next Meeting
The next meeting was set for Wednesday, September 30 at the Jordans’.
Respectfully,
Steve
Respectfully submitted, Steve Lightholder, secretary
