Thursday January 25, 2018 Cross Country Ski to Smuggler's Notch by Steve and Heather BaileyThe outlook for this trip was not good. A full day of rain two days before, and subzero temperatures the night before. We were only able to convince one person to go with us. When we arrived at Barnes Camp, we put on our microspikes, as the parking lot was a skating rink. We checked out the trail and found out that there was an inch or two of fresh snow, so we put on our skis and headed up. The sun was shining and it was in the single digits above zero. The wind increased as we got higher, and the fresh snow got scarcer. Luckily there was some at the edges of the trail. When we got to the top, the wind was howling. We found 60 army men and women who had camped out in the subzero weather for a training session. The far side of the notch was in the shade and also directly in the wind, so we turned around and headed down. Once we got past the two sharp S turns, it was easy going back to the car.
