Sunday August 07, 2016 Hike: Clark Brook Trail & LT to Lincoln Gap by Jill AspinallEvery time I do a side trail to the Long Trail, it increases my respect for those, led by the Montpelier Section, who have done them all. As I progress along the Long Trail in pursuit of completion, my approach through mostly day hikes often requires climbing up to the ridge line to the Long Trail, i.e. that means doing side trails. Many are little known gems, the effort well worth the payoff.
Today's hike starting with the Clark Brook Trail fit that description going up almost 2,000 feet during 3 miles. Quite the attractive side trail, I saw no-one. Up on the Long Trail, it was a different story as I saw over 20 people, many doing day hikes in and out from Lincoln Gap. My favorite folks were 2 through hikers on their way northbound to Canada. They hailed from Charleston, South Carolina. One had previously completed the AT. The other on her first long distance through hike, soon let me know it wouldn't be her last. They were fun to share space with during lunch. I was delighted to assist their journey just a little by packing out their trash.
Today's outing didn't attract any additional participants, yet thanks to my gracious husband helping with the morning car shuttle, I was able to make the most of the day, and have a very pleasant hike on the trail alone, and yet never alone for long.
