Saturday September 19, 2015 Scrag Mountain by Phyllis RubensteinCo-led by Rudy Townsend and Phyllis Rubenstein, 11 people hiked from Bowen Road in Waitsfield to Brook Road in Northfield, a distance of about 5 miles. It was a gorgeous fall day and we enjoyed the sun, blue skies and warm temperatures. Near the trailhead in Waitsfield, we saw an old cellar hole. We took a short side trail to a waterfalls, passed by an area that long ago saw beaver activity, visited the cabin just below the summit and ate lunch at the site of the old fire tower, where we enjoyed the views to the west. On the way down to the trailhead in Northfield, we saw a large rock formation, an old fallen down cabin and finished the hike on an old town road. This is not a marked trail; not even the trailheads are marked! The trail in Northfield passes by land owned by Rudy, who shared information about the area. We were also fortunate to have a retired forester on the hike who knew the Waitsfield section well. All hikers enjoyed a pleasant excursion and the lovely fall day.
