Saturday August 01, 2015 Long Trail Section Backpack by Phyllis Rubenstein

On August 1, I hiked from Route 4 to Sunrise Shelter, my longest backpack of this summer. The next day I had wonderful views at the Great Cliffs of Horrid and Middlebury Snow Bowl. I camped at the Skyline Tentsite. The third day, while enjoying views on Mt. Grant, thunder began to rumble and a thunderstorm followed as I descended to Lincoln Gap. I spent that night in my tent at Battel Shelter. My last day, I hiked up Mt. Abraham and found the 1960's airplane crash site below the summit. After enjoying views on Mt. Ellen, I found myself in another thunderstorm; this one had hail as well. I took shelter from the storm at Stark's Nest, a warming hut at Mad River Glen. Once the sun came out, I hiked down to App Gap and walked to my car three miles away.
