Sunday September 28, 2014 Belvidere Mountain by KenThis hike is described in GMC's map of the Long Trail, as follows:
33 - Belvidere Mtn via Long Trail: 5 hrs; 5.6 mi. (rt); 2140'. Head north on the LT from Rte 118 at Eden Crossing on what is a rough and steep trail in places, climbing to Belvidere Saddle where the Forester's Trail joins from the northeast. Turn right and reach the summit in 0.2 mi where there are views from the ground, or the daring may ascend a 70-foot high fire tower with even wider horizons.
A very accurate description! The view includes the twenty-one wind turbines of the Lowell range and the asbestos mine's tailings pond, reminders that Vermont is not entirely wilderness. The GMC's LT map may be augmented by an older USGS map of the area, at http://docs.unh.edu/VT/jayp53se.jpg
Our party of seven left MHS at 9:30 and returned about 5:30, spending a pleasant 45 minutes at the summit with several other parties (each of which seemed to have a very well-behaved dog.) The weather was superb and the fall foliage in full bloom. Somehow or other, we avoided much of the leaf peeper traffic.
The group photo was taken by an unidentified young lady who had just received her GMC membership as a gift.Click on a photo to see the original version. See photo gallery on Facebook (pull-down under 'Trips')
