Burnt Rock Mountain
Hiking Boots and Lady's Slippers
Next to one of the toughest little climbs on the Long Trial, just below the summit of Burnt Rock (3271) in Fayston, bloom several Lady's Slippers. The orchids give hikers hope just before the scramble to the rocky, open summit. Nine hikers turned out on the Sunday before the summer solstice for views of Lake Champlain, the White Mountains and the south flank of Camels Hump. It was a welcome break in a spring of rain, a day that made the effort worthwhile and brought several new hikers up the Hedgehog Brook and Long Trails.
