Work Hike: Smugglers' Notch

We had eleven people out for the spring work hike at Smugglers' Notch. The weather cooperated - no rain, and fairly cool temps.

Eric and Robert formed a chainsaw crew to remove a couple to large trees on the Elephant's Head Trail not too far from the picnic area. After clearing those trees from the trail, they drove up to the Notch, hiked up to Sterling Pond, and proceeded towards Chilcoot Pass. They found many medium and small trees across the trail, as well as some snow, and did not reach Chilcoot. We will schedule a makeup session for that stretch of trail.

Steve, John. Evan and Dara went up EHT with rakes and bow-saw, and had a very long day. They experienced some snow at the top of EHT.

Andrew, Reidun, George and Cynthia went up the Sterling Pond Trail with rakes, a hazel hoe, and a 1950-era entrenching tool. The adopter had just cleared a large tree obstructing the trail, so the main work was cleaning rocks and water bars.

We were out of the woods by 4:00, and out of the Shed by 5.
